4 Ways to Have an Eco-Friendly Wedding

  1. CANDLES

Candles are essential for setting the mood at any wedding, they can truly make or break the look of your event. Paraffin candles are most commonly used due to its affordable price and availability, however, it remains to be the least sustainable choice. Unfortunately, soy candles are no better, while they are derived from natural ingredients, soy plants, soy agriculture largely contributes to deforestation (removal of forests in order to make land for other production). Beeswax candles are a 100% natural, renewable byproduct from extra honeycombs. Candles made from beeswax are the most eco-friendly option when considering all options. Not only are beeswax candles the most eco-friendly option, they look amazing for any aesthetic as well.

2. FLORAL

Flowers play an important role in any wedding from start to finish. When obtaining certain flowers, they can be imported and treated with toxic pesticides and fungicides, these toxins are harmful to the human body and the planet. To make a greener choice, aim to work with local florists who do not support the use of such toxins. It is also highly recommended to choose flowers that are in-season to the location of your venue. You may also want to encourage your guests to take some of the flower arrangements with them after the wedding reception, this way no flowers will be tossed out after one evening.

3. STATIONERY

Glossy wedding invitations are beautiful, however, usually end up getting tossed. In the world of digital media and access, you can send just as beautiful wedding invitations online through websites such as Greenvelope, allowing you to track the RSVPs and keep your guests updated. If you would like to go the traditional route and send out paper invitations to your guest, you can opt for eco-friendly or biodegradable wedding invitations. Recycled paper and soy-based inks are an amazing alternative to send out invites. Plantable wedding invitations are also a fun surprise for your guests. These invitations can be planted and grow into wildflowers or herbs!

4.FOOD & BEVERAGE

“It is estimated that the average American meal travels about 1500 miles to get from farm to plate making your meal a big contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.“ When it comes down to catering, request your wedding planner for a caterer who utilizes and prioritizes local, in-season produce. To avoid as much food waste as possible, make sure portion sizes are appropriate and to order enough food for all guests. For bar service, aim to source from your local breweries and wineries, supporting your very own community.
